"It Should Be 50-50"... Conflicting Insurance Claims Emerge Over 'Stealth Vehicle' Accidents on Night Roads
The JTBC variety program 'Han Moonchul's Dashcam Review' highlighted the dangers of "stealth vehicles"—cars driving without headlights at night—and the resulting disputes over fault ratios between insurance companies. The program showcased various accident scenarios and the controversy surrounding how insurance companies assign liability when vehicles are nearly invisible in the dark.
The danger of accidents caused by so-called 'stealth vehicles'—those driving without turning on their headlights during night driving—and the resulting debates over fault ratios have been raised. In a video from the JTBC variety program 'Han Moonchul's Dashcam Review', various accident cases involving vehicles that suddenly appeared out of the darkness were introduced.
"How can you avoid it when it's not visible?"... Accident scenes caused by stealth vehicles
The video showed several accident scenes related to stealth vehicles driving without turning on their headlights or tail lights. It captured a situation on a highway where a vehicle stopped due to an accident had its headlights off, causing a following vehicle to fail to notice it and collide. In one particular case, an accident caused by a truck standing still without its lights on was introduced, and the cast members pointed out the situation where the vehicle was almost invisible, mentioning the danger of such accidents.
In another case, a stealth vehicle appeared that had crashed into a median strip and crossed into the lane. Regarding this accident, which occurred in a section with few streetlights and limited headlight illumination, the cast members raised questions as to why only this specific vehicle could not be avoided even though surrounding vehicles did, explaining the difficulty of securing visibility at the time of the accident. Additionally, a scene was included where a bicycle riding on a night road without lights was suddenly exposed to vehicle lights, resulting in an accident.
Insurance companies' fault ratio calculation, controversy over "absurd claims"
Conflicts arising during the process of calculating fault ratios after an accident are also a major part of the video. In one accident shown in the video, after colliding with a vehicle that had not turned on its headlights, a controversy arose due to differing fault claims between the insurance companies. It was revealed that the insurance company for the dashcam vehicle claimed the dashcam vehicle's fault was 70%, while the truck's insurance company claimed it was 90%.
In response, the cast members reacted that such claims were absurd. In particular, considering the situation where the accident vehicle could not be avoided because it had not turned on its headlights, they expressed doubt regarding the fault ratio. The video mentioned a case where the police judged the dashcam vehicle to be the perpetrator, dealing with the conflicts that arise over responsibility for accidents occurring in a state of invisibility.
Highways on rainy days, the dangers of speeding and stealth driving
The danger of driving on highways during rain was also addressed. A video was released showing a vehicle driving at high speeds despite poor visibility in rainy conditions. The vehicle in the video was driving at a speed exceeding 140 km/h, and at the same time, it was shown to be in a stealth state where the headlights or tail lights were not functioning properly.
The cast members mentioned that one should basically reduce speed by 20% when it is raining, and reduce it by up to 50% when visibility is poor. Furthermore, they emphasized that when entering the road, one must make their presence known to other vehicles, pointing out that the act of driving a stealth vehicle itself is a very dangerous behavior on the road.
