Play 'Scenery of Life 2026': A Sophisticated Feast of Hatred and Discrimination

According to Shinsegye Theater Company on the 29th, the play 'Scenery of Life 2026' is based on a true story from a 2017 community debate in a district in Seoul, where parents of students with disabilities knelt to plead for the establishment of a special school for the disabled.

Shinsegye Theater Company once again unfolds on stage the landscapes of our society that remain unchanged even after 10 years, ranging from the Seongjin School case in Seongdong District from 2017 to 2025, to the ongoing case of Yeomyung School in Gangseo District this year.

Through this, the production aims to depict a comedy-like tragedy created by the limitations of our society's perception of disability, showing 'our appearance as we cry out against discrimination for a world that is equal to us.'

Director Kim Su Jung stated, 'Through these incidents known as the NIMBY phenomenon, I want to show how people who are not the disabled themselves view disability, and how the incidents we thought were special stories are actually ordinary matters so close to my own life. I want to pose the question of whether anyone in that debate can truly be called wrong.'

Shinsegye Theater Company is a young creative group that confronts truths our society ignores or finds uncomfortable, such as war, state violence, real estate, and gender. They have been nominated for the 'New Concept Theater Award' at the 54th Dong-A Theater Awards, the 'Young Theater Award' at the 55th and 60th Baeksang Arts Awards, and the 61st Dong-A Theater Awards.

'Scenery of Life 2026' has been selected as a resident group support project for the Seoul Foundation for Arts and Culture venues and can be seen at the Miarigogae Art Theater from November 26 to December 6, 2026.

In this performance, the dense ensemble of Shinsegye Theater Company actors—including Kim Bo Kyung, Kim Eon-i, Kim Jeong-hoe, Bae Seong-woo, Yu A-jin, Lee Myeong-yeol, Seul-gi Lee, Lee Si-rae, Jang Woo Young, Jo Eun-seo, Choi Beom, Choi Jun Hee, Han Ji-hye, and Hwang Ye-won—will be joined by actors with heavy expertise, Kang Jin-hwi, Kim Hyun, Seung Ui-yeol, Lee Eun, and Lee Jung-eun, to unfold an even more intense and multi-dimensional forum of debate on stage.
