Trot singers Kim Tae-yeon and Oh Yu-jin show 'old soul' charm

Trot singers Kim Tae-yeon and Oh Yu-jin shared unique daily experiences and musical backgrounds they encounter despite their young age. A conversation between the two singers, who were invited to the YouTube channel 'The Couple Next Door, Seo Hyun-chul and Jung Jae-eun' operated by actors Seo Hyun-chul and Jung Jae-eun, was released.

"Have you eaten?"... The extraordinary etiquette of trot singers

In the video, Kim and Oh mentioned common characteristics they experience while working as trot singers. The two revealed that since they mainly meet elders when attending events, etiquette education occurs naturally. Oh said in the video that when she goes to events, there are only elders present, and it is a daily occurrence for her to ask them, "Have you had your meal?" She also drew a contrast with idol colleagues, noting that unlike idols who say they couldn't eat anything for fear of gaining weight during music shows, she tends to eat well.

Kim also mentioned the physical difficulties she faces during the singing process. She explained that there are times when her voice comes out with difficulty while singing, describing situations where even drinking water doesn't help. Regarding this, she shared that besides drinking water, technical aspects are necessary, such as "swallowing" to control the sound.

From Pansori to Trot... Musical roots and the learning process

The two also talked about their respective musical starting points. Kim revealed that she started Pansori at age 4 and subsequently made her debut through KBS at age 6. She explained that performing trot felt somewhat easier because Pansori and trot share many similarities, such as elements like flute-like sounds or bending.

Oh recalled her experience of following her grandmother to a singing class when she was in the 5th grade. She said that after going to her grandmother's singing class and singing a few lines, she heard people around her saying she was good, which led her to audition and naturally resulted in her debut. She added that the environment of frequently being exposed to trot while living with her grandmother served as her musical foundation.

"Holiday pocket money has decreased since my debut"

The conversation continued with talk about the upcoming Chuseok holiday. Kim recalled memories of receiving generous pocket money when the family gathered for holidays before her debut as a singer. Kim drew laughter by sharing her family's reaction; in the past, they would give her 500,000 won if she sang, but now that she has debuted, no matter how many traditional bows she performs, they don't give her pocket money, saying, "Because you are earning money now."

Oh also agreed that pocket money seems to decrease as one gets older. She shared the realistic concerns of singers facing the holidays, saying it is sad that while elders sometimes give 100,000 won to younger children when she bows to them, they now sometimes only give 50,000 won.
