iPhone 18 Pro achieves laptop-level performance with 1.5x higher benchmark scores
Tech YouTuber JOOYEON highlighted the significant hardware improvements of the upcoming iPhone 18 Pro, including enhanced thermal management and chipset performance comparable to the M series. The new model also introduces advanced camera features like variable aperture and AI subject tracking.

Ahead of the release of the new iPhone 18 Pro, tech YouTuber JOOYEON pointed out the changes in the new product for users considering a device upgrade. In a video released by Defconn TV, JOOYEON explained that the hardware performance of this model has been significantly improved.
Benchmark scores improve with 3x expansion of vapor chamber area
One of the major changes in the iPhone 18 Pro is the improvement in hardware performance. According to the video, the highest score in the 3DMark benchmark test for this model appeared to be approximately 1.5 times higher than the previous model. This sustained performance is due to the expansion of the 'vapor chamber' that controls heat inside the device. Results confirmed through thermal camera testing show that the area of the vapor chamber is three times wider than the previous model, occupying a significant portion of the back of the device to manage heat.

The video mentioned that the chipset performance of this model shows a level of performance similar to the M series chipsets found in MacBooks. However, as it aims for high-end performance, it was noted that the weight might be felt, and the increased price point may cause differences depending on user preferences. Meanwhile, among users who feel burdened by the weight of the Max model, it was suggested that waiting for the 'iPhone Air' generation, which is expected to be released next year with reinforced camera performance, could be an option. Currently, the Air model has only one camera, but it is projected that two cameras will be equipped in the next generation.
Introduction of variable aperture and AI subject tracking functions
Practical changes were also captured in the camera functions. This model introduces a 'variable aperture' function that allows the lens aperture to be adjusted. By adjusting the aperture value, the amount and shape of light can be controlled. The video explained that when photographing the sparkling ripples on the water at sunset, setting the aperture value to 4.0 can maximize the sparkling light effect, and it is also possible to create an effect where light spreads in a cross shape when shooting night scenes.

An artificial intelligence (AI) powered subject tracking function has also been added. By double-tapping a specific object on the screen, the AI recognizes that subject and follows its movement. It demonstrates the ability to refocus on the original subject even if the subject moves quickly or the camera's gaze momentarily turns elsewhere. Additionally, a 'texture' function that expresses skin smoothly has been added to the basic camera setting's customization menu.
Improved battery life and enhanced design unity
Battery performance has also been improved compared to the previous iPhone 17 Pro. The video mentioned that the usage time that could be experienced in the iPhone 17 Pro Max can now be enjoyed in the standard Pro model as well. In particular, it is characterized by the fact that it can be used several hours longer than before even without turning on low power mode.
In terms of design, compatibility with the previous model has been strengthened. The color difference between the frame and the body has been reduced to increase design unity, and accordingly, the specifications have become similar enough to use existing genuine cases for the iPhone 17 Pro. Among the color lineups, 'Burgundy' and 'Glacier' were introduced. The Glacier color sometimes gives a silver feel depending on the lighting.
Product evaluation according to user purpose
The evaluation of this new product is divided depending on the user's purpose of use. While it could be an attractive option for users who emphasize high-end performance or have high camera utilization, the assessment is that for those aiming for light usage, the burden of weight and price may be felt without a significant perceived improvement in performance. The video suggested that for users planning to replace their devices for the first time in a long while, choosing this model would be a good option.
