"No reason to switch for an extra $80"... Shindong analyzes the practicality of BOOX Note Air 6C

Creator Shindong shares his two-week experience using the BOOX Note Air 6C, analyzing its technical advancements and practical utility. He provides clear purchasing guidelines, suggesting it is a good time for beginners to buy but not worth the upgrade for existing 5C users.

Creator Shindong, who complained of eye fatigue from looking at scripts and monitors all day, shared his thoughts after using the 'BOOX Note Air 6C', the successor to his previous model, the BOOX Note Air 5C, for two weeks. He analyzed the technical progress of this new product and its utility in actual usage environments, presenting clear purchasing criteria for beginners and existing users.

An internal update that maintains the appearance while changing the chipset and pen position

The core changes of this model analyzed by Shindong lie in the improvement of hardware performance and convenience. Specifications directly related to visual elements, such as screen size, resolution, color implementation method, and pen type, are almost identical to the previous 5C. It features a 10.3-inch screen with a resolution of 300 PPI for black and white and 150 PPI for color, equipped with a color E-ink display capable of expressing 4,096 colors. The configuration of 6GB of RAM and 64GB of storage is also the same as the predecessor.

However, the internal engine, the processor, has been replaced from the 2020 Snapdragon 750G to the latest Snapdragon 7s Gen 3. As the process is refined from 8nm to 4nm, the structure allows for faster processing speeds and reduced power consumption. In terms of software, it supports Android 16 and features Bluetooth 6.0, securing a longer period for future update environments.

In terms of user experience (UX), the change in the magnetic attachment position of the pen is notable. In the previous model, there was the inconvenience of the volume button being pressed together when attaching the pen to the top, but the 6C improved usability by moving this to the side. However, Shindong raised questions regarding the design where part of the product's case structure detaches, mentioning it as an area that requires user feedback. Meanwhile, the fact that it is perfectly compatible with the existing keyboard cover for the 5C was cited as a positive factor for existing users.

"You will regret it if you use it like an iPad"... The correct way to use an E-ink tablet

Shindong pointed out the expectation of 'versatility' as a common mistake made by E-ink tablet beginners. He advised that because it is equipped with the Android operating system, people try to install general apps like YouTube or Instagram, but eventually regret it due to slow response speeds and ghosting. He urged users to clarify their purpose, stating, "If you want to use it like an iPad, it is right to buy an iPad or a cheap Android tablet."

The optimal way of use he suggests is to focus on 'reading and writing.' The method of displaying a PDF document on one side and opening a handwritten note on the other to take memos is similar to the experience of using paper scripts and memo pads. In particular, the 'Smooth Mode' added to this model showed the effect of making screen transitions smoother during web surfing than before. Additionally, the fact that sufficient usage time can be secured with just one charge about once a week acts as a strong advantage for users who value battery efficiency.

The utility of color E-ink and expectations for the display

Shindong evaluated color E-ink as more useful than black and white models. While not suitable for viewing photos, the ability to distinguish app icons or menus by color and use highlighter colors when taking notes on PDFs serves as an advantage in actual use. He explained that while the color expression of this model gives a feeling similar to newsprint, it is sufficiently valuable for reading and writing purposes.

Regarding the next model, he added the opinion that he hopes the contrast of the display will increase. Currently, it is essential to turn on the front light in environments where the illumination is not high, but he expressed expectation that if the display can be expressed like cleaner, whiter paper without separate lighting in the future, both battery life and visual convenience will be improved.

Why it is a 'wait' for existing users and 'the right time' for beginners

In conclusion, Shindong defined this new product as a 'complex option.' For beginners attempting to purchase an E-ink tablet capable of color implementation and pen writing for the first time, he evaluated that now is an appropriate time to buy, considering the design, performance, and software support period. This is because the latest chipset has been added to a proven design.

On the other hand, he provided a cold analysis that there is insufficient justification to switch for existing users already using the predecessor, the 5C. He cited the fact that the difference in actual usage speed between the 5C and 6C is minimal, and the price difference between the two products in the US market reaches approximately $80. His conclusion is that it is difficult to feel a dramatic change significant enough to pay an additional $80.
