Tablo, the leader of Epik High, has opened up about his long-standing battle with insomnia and how it has shaped his outlook on life. Moving beyond the simple frustration of being unable to sleep, he candidly shared the destructive impact sleep deprivation has had on his creative work and daily life.

Tablo Discusses Insomnia and Sleep Routines in Official YouTube Video

Tablo confessed that poor sleep habits formed during his childhood have persisted into his adulthood. He revealed the hidden toll of the all-night work sessions common in the industry, noting that he previously viewed sleep deprivation as a kind of "badge of honor" or proof of his intense immersion in his craft.

A dangerous tightrope walk between creativity and sleep

Tablo delved into the relationship between the "sleepless nights" often experienced by writers and artists and the creative process. While methods such as rewriting lyrics at 4 a.m. were part of his creative flow, they acted as a double-edged sword that eroded his physical and mental energy. He pointed out that sleep deprivation does more than cause fatigue; it is a decisive factor that can collapse one's entire daily well-being.

He also shared his confusion regarding conflicting advice from sleep experts. He noted that recommended sleep hygiene practices—such as exercising, taking warm showers, or seeking morning sunlight—can sometimes feel contradictory and difficult to implement. Alongside concerns that melatonin intake might actually hinder sleep maintenance, he described the nightmare-like psychological pressure caused by chronic sleep loss.

"Do not try to become great by cutting back on sleep"

After much trial and error, Tablo has established a practical sleep routine that includes taking magnesium and using noise-canceling AirPods. He now focuses on creating an optimal environment by blocking out light and controlling external noise, reflecting a determination to break away from his past lifestyle and restore his circadian rhythm.

The most poignant part of his reflection was his advice on the importance of rest. "You must stop trying to become great by cutting back on sleep," Tablo emphasized. It is a heavy message for artists and modern professionals alike who sacrifice their health for the sake of productivity. He concluded by asserting that sleep is not merely downtime, but the essential foundation that sustains life.
