Songgolmae's Koo Chang Mo reveals unrequited love motif and live broadcast accident

Singer Koo Chang Mo reminisced about the origins of the group Songgolmae's signature hit "You Met by Chance" and a dangerous accident he experienced during a live broadcast. In a recently aired video on the YouTube channel Dongchimi, Koo and Kim Beom-ryong appeared to share stories regarding their musical experiences and hit songs.

The beginning of 'You Met by Chance': Memories of high school unrequited love

Koo revealed the songwriting and composition process behind "You Met by Chance," the track that propelled Songgolmae to fame. In the video, he explained that the song originated from an unrequited love he experienced during his first year of high school. He noted that the experience of "accidentally meeting" a student from Ewha Girls' High School served as the song's motif. Koo shared an anecdote about chasing after the student at the time, noting how those feelings of unrequited love eventually translated into musical inspiration.

A life turning point: Meeting Bae Cheol-soo at Seoraksan Mountain

Koo also discussed a major turning point in his life regarding the formation of Songgolmae. He shared that while he was staying at Seoraksan Mountain to study during a brief hiatus from music, Bae Cheol-soo personally traveled to the mountain to persuade him to join the group. He noted that in an era before mobile phones, Bae appeared suddenly without warning. Bae's visit, traveling through unpaved roads and kicking up dust, became the decisive factor that allowed Songgolmae to form and begin their activities.

Electric shock accident during live broadcast

A harrowing moment from Songgolmae's heyday was also revealed. Koo recalled an electric shock accident that occurred during a live broadcast. He reported that while Bae was holding a microphone, a lack of proper grounding caused an electrical accident, resulting in a significant shock to Koo. He described the urgent situation where, with no ambulance available, they had to be transported to the hospital in the cargo bed of a truck used for transporting musical instruments. He also detailed the intense atmosphere on set and how the PD recognized and responded to the accident.

Kim Beom-ryong's vocal secret: Childhood experiences

Kim Beom-ryong, who appeared alongside him, spoke about the roots of his unique vocalization and singing style. Kim mentioned his experience selling ice cream in the 6th grade and selling buckwheat jelly in his middle school uniform. He revealed that the need to shout "Buckwheat jelly for sale!" to reach distant customers naturally became the catalyst for learning vocalization techniques that utilize resonance.
