iSharing launches 'Meetups' to simplify temporary location sharing

iSharing, a global location tracking application, has announced the launch of 'Meetups,' a group location sharing feature that allows participants of meetings or events to share their locations only for a specified period.

Meetups focuses on reducing the inconvenience of establishing friend connections or linking accounts for one-time gatherings, as well as minimizing the privacy risks associated with constant location exposure. Users can join a group using only an invitation link or a QR code, eliminating the need for formal friend requests.

Participants' locations are displayed in real-time on a map for the duration set by the organizer. Once the sharing period ends, all meeting-related information, including participant location data, is automatically deleted.

The location sharing duration can be set from as little as one minute up to a maximum of 30 days, with up to 30 participants allowed per group. The feature is available for free on both iOS and Android operating systems.

Meetups is designed for scenarios such as camping trips, workshops, or university MTs (Membership Training), where participants traveling from different locations head toward a single destination. It is also useful for coordinating with travel companions during overseas trips or for members of running and cycling clubs who need to monitor group movement.

While existing location sharing services often maintain friend connections or account links long after a one-time gathering has ended, Meetups is designed so that users participate only when necessary, with all relevant data automatically cleared after the sharing period expires.

The company explained that the service is ideal for users who want to check locations during specific events or schedules rather than through continuous, long-term location sharing.

“Meetups is a feature that allows users to share their location only when necessary and ensures participant information is deleted once the gathering is over,” said Ju Yong-jae, co-CEO of iSharing. “We aimed to provide a way to selectively share locations based on the situation while reducing the burden of constant location and account information sharing.”
