"The food that helped me endure my retake year in Daegu"... Deomyeonsang opens up about his first love and his 'Outsider Baseball Team' days while eating makchang
YouTuber Deomyeonsang shared memories of his challenging year retaking college entrance exams in Daegu, including the food that sustained him and his long-distance romance. While visiting a makchang restaurant in Yangcheon-gu via Seoul Bike, he reflected on his time as the "ace" of a unique cram school class.
During a journey of finding local restaurants while riding a bicycle, YouTuber Deomyeonsang brought up memories of his retake year in Daegu that changed his life.
A video released by the YouTube channel 'Deomyeonsang' captured his daily life visiting a makchang restaurant near Yangcheon-gu while riding a Seoul Bike. On this day, Deomyeonsang reminisced about the one year he spent retaking exams in Daegu, sharing stories about the food that helped him endure that time and his dynamic life at the cram school.
"Searching for the cheapest academy in the country to go to Daegu"... The choice of a retaker chasing cost-effectiveness
Deomyeonsang recalled his memories of 2007 when he was retaking his exams in Daegu. He revealed that while contemplating his career path because he did not achieve the desired grades, he chose a cram school in Daegu instead of a famous one in Seoul to avoid placing a financial burden on his parents. He explained the reason he went to a certain academy in Daegu that was rumored to be the cheapest in the country, saying, "I felt sorry for giving my parents millions of won, so I looked for a way to study as cheaply as possible without causing them much burden."
The academy he attended was far from the typical form. Renting the second floor of a commercial building, the place gathered people of various ages, from retakers to those taking exams for a third time, or those with their own unique stories. Deomyeonsang conveyed the unusual environment of the time, saying, "It was a place where manga-like people gathered, such as an older brother who built ships on Geoje Island and a sister who quit being a nurse."
The ace of 'Outsider Baseball Team Class B', and weekend dating with his first love
At the time, when classes were divided based on grades within the academy, Deomyeonsang was assigned to Class B after ranking 4th overall. He recalled, "Class B was literally like an outsider baseball team," noting that he played the role of the ace of Class B among people from various backgrounds who lacked basic study skills. It was a period when he devoted himself to his studies to the extent that the older brothers around him would ask him questions as if he were a private tutor.
However, there were also environments that made it difficult to focus on studying. Deomyeonsang confessed that he was dating his first love in Jinju at the time. He continued a long-distance relationship, traveling between Daegu and Jinju every weekend with his first love, whom he had met from the third year of middle school until he was twenty years old. He conveyed his complex emotions from that time, saying, "There were faint loves and also nonsensical incidents, but eventually, as I broke up with my girlfriend, I miraculously ended up quitting the academy."
"Makchang is a memory of my life"... Sincere conversation shared at a regular favorite restaurant
At the makchang specialty restaurant he reached by bicycle, Deomyeonsang enjoyed makchang, which held memories of his days in Daegu. He emphasized that makchang was the food that helped him endure the difficult period of his life, saying, "I lived near Anjirang in Daegu in 2007 and visited so often that I ate makchang at least once a week."
While eating together, he defined a great restaurant as a comprehensive element that combines not just the taste of the food, but also the memories of who you ate with and in what kind of atmosphere. The journey of riding a bicycle in the late September weather, entering autumn, was filled with a time connecting the weary days of the past with the leisure of the present.
