Novice plant parent Uhm Ji-won recently visited Seongsu-dong to select new greenery, sharing how she manages various species including a fern that has survived for 10 years. She noted that providing plants with sufficient recovery time in semi-shade after repotting and practicing "indifference" can sometimes be more effective than overwatering.

Uhm Ji-won, who has recently immersed herself in growing plants and transformed into a novice "plant parent," shared her daily life living with greenery. She stated that she began collecting plants one by one after experiencing the air-purifying effects and the healing nature of plants. She shared that after moving, she gathered small pots that had been in her home for a long time in one corner of her bathtub, and noticing the improved air quality whenever she entered that area became the motivation for her to collect more plants.

"Just as moving causes physical exhaustion": Environmental changes and care methods for plants

Uhm Ji-won shared the meticulous management process involved in growing plants. She noted that just as humans suffer from physical exhaustion when they move, plants also require an adaptation period when their environment changes. She added the know-how that rather than placing a plant that has just finished repotting in a sunny spot with strong sunlight, one should give it sufficient time to recover in semi-shade before moving it to the desired location.

Different care methods for various plants were also introduced. For the Lady Palm, she demonstrated setting up a hydroponic cultivation spot by creating a tray on a transparent table, and on watering days, she used bottom watering to help the roots absorb water well so the plant could grow healthily. She also performed meticulous care, such as wiping dust accumulated on the leaves with a wet wet wipe. Comparing the intake of nutrients for plant growth to "eating a meal," she explained the importance of repotting into larger pots depending on the plant's condition.

Repotting outing in Seongsu-dong, "Searching for uncommon beauty"

With her affection for plants deepening, Uhm Ji-won visited Seongsu-dong to personally handle repotting. She carefully examined products to find plants with uncommon shapes, showing herself inspecting and selecting the shape of a plant called 'Florida Beauty.'

On this day, Uhm Ji-won cited "air-purifying ability" as one of her criteria for choosing plants. She mentioned plants that clear indoor air, such as Table Palm, Sansevieria, Spathiphyllum, and Ivy, and expressed particular interest in the Areca Palm, which is known to have excellent air-purifying capabilities. She also expressed the joy of growing plants while sharing the story of a fern she has become attached to, which has repeatedly nearly died and come back to life for 10 years. During the repotting process, she practiced the principle that for plants whose roots need to grow, one must choose a pot with sufficient depth to allow for enough nutrient intake, continuing her daily life with plants.

"Sometimes indifference is better than water": An honest confession from a plant parent

As one of the rules of thumb gained from growing plants, Uhm Ji-won mentioned "indifference." Recalling her past experience working with landscaping trees outdoors, she shared her reflection that sometimes appropriate indifference can be helpful, based on her experience that plants actually grew better when she did not give them too much love or too much water.
