Uhm Jung-hwa Hails a Mystery Dish as the Best She Has Tasted on “Please Take Care of My Refrigerator”

Singer Uhm Jung-hwa’s refrigerator is set to become the center of an intense contest among chefs. The August 9 episode of JTBC’s “Please Take Care of My Refrigerator,” directed by Lee Chang-woo and Lee Rin-ha and airing at 8:50 p.m., will feature a series of 15-minute cooking battles using ingredients found inside Uhm’s refrigerator.

Uhm is known as an icon of rigorous self-care, giving the chefs an exacting palate to win over. Each competitor approaches that challenge with a different concept, turning the ingredients from her refrigerator into the basis for sharply contrasting culinary strategies.

The first battle pits Son Jong-won against Yoo Yong-wook. Son prepares a dish built around a “gourmet world tour,” weaving together flavors from around the world. Yoo takes the opposite route by concentrating on Brazilian cuisine, establishing a clear contrast with Son’s globe-spanning concept. Born in 1984, Son is 15 years younger than Uhm, who was born in 1969.

As Son’s world-tour contest gets underway, Yoo declares an “emergency” after running into an unexpected obstacle. He had initially appeared relaxed and seemingly comfortable on the set, but he begins to lose his composure amid the nonstop advice pouring in from the other chefs.

The atmosphere quickly heats up when the flustered Yoo cries, “Emergency! Emergency!” to signal how urgent the situation has become. Recalling his victory over Kim Poong during his first appearance on the program, Yoo adds, “I was able to win thanks to Chef Son Jong-won.”

With only 15 minutes available, tension rises over which dish will capture Uhm’s taste: Son’s culinary world tour or Yoo’s Brazilian-inspired creation. Their opposing concepts make the first contest a direct test of whether a broad combination of global flavors or a focused Brazilian approach will prove more persuasive.

The second battle introduces another new challenge. For the first time in the program’s history, the chefs compete in a two-on-two tag-team match, with Jung Ho-young and Sam Kim facing Kim Poong and Lee Moon-jung.

Jung and Sam enter the contest with prior experience in team battles. Emphasizing the strength of their partnership, they say, “We were almost always on the same team.” The pair call themselves “the cook and the cooking utensil” and even perform a couples dance, taking control of the atmosphere before the cooking battle unfolds.

The opposing combination of Kim and Lee is equally formidable. Known as the “Chinese Cuisine Siblings,” they stage a performance that brings together Kim’s freewheeling ideas and Lee’s cooking ability as a master craftsman in Chinese cuisine.

Jung and Sam openly try to unsettle their rivals, saying, “Even if Chef Lee Moon-jung does well, we think writer Kim Poong will ruin it.” Their blunt remark places additional attention on how the opposing team’s two very different strengths will function together under the 15-minute limit.

Kim, who is known by the nickname “Magye Chef,” enters the tag-team match with access to Lee’s established cooking skills. A central point to watch is what kind of final result he will produce by drawing on her ability while contributing his own unconstrained ideas.

After all the dishes are completed, Uhm begins tasting them herself, sampling each finished creation one by one. After trying one particular menu item, she offers exceptional praise, saying, “This is the most delicious one of these I have ever tasted.” The identity of the dish behind her reaction is not disclosed in advance.

Uhm continues tasting the food several times and repeatedly voices her admiration, delivering an enthusiastic eating display. Her strong response adds another layer of suspense to the question of which chef, or which team, has succeeded in winning over her palate.

The final winner of the cooking competition centered on Uhm Jung-hwa’s refrigerator will be revealed when JTBC’s “Please Take Care of My Refrigerator” airs on August 9 at 8:50 p.m.
