The message of “Freewill”: choosing one’s own path

According to the lyrics presented in the video, Bumkey sings about the conflict created by opposing voices within the mind and the free will needed to overcome that struggle. The song places those competing voices on different sides, describing “an angel” on the left and another voice on the right. One side offers peace, while the other insists that there is no choice.

Against that tension, Bumkey emphasizes that the decision remains his own. The lyrics declare that, when faced with two paths, “the choice is always mine.” Through the idea at the heart of “Freewill,” he expresses the determination to decide for himself which side to follow. Rather than allowing either voice to make the decision for him, the song presents choice as something he continues to possess even amid confusion.

The lyrics also express a resolve to shut out hurtful words and external noise so that attention can remain on a truthful voice. According to the vocal transcription included with the video, Bumkey sings that he does not allow bad words into his soul. Even when the angel’s voice is low, he says that he remains in control, reinforcing the song’s focus on personal agency.

A particularly prominent line states that “the truth is always quiet,” followed by an emphasis that this is what feels real. The contrast between quiet truth and surrounding noise further develops the song’s central conflict. Although a war may be unfolding inside his thoughts, Bumkey sings that he knows what is real and can distinguish it from the voices competing for his attention.

The song’s message ultimately moves from inner conflict toward resolve. Bumkey says he will cut off the noise and rise above it, connecting that act of resistance with the freedom to choose his own direction. The lyrics frame “Freewill” as both a decision and a means of overcoming confusion: he recognizes the conflicting voices, refuses to let harmful words enter his soul and retains control over the path he takes.
